What Is a SIP Calculator?

A Systematic Investment Plan (SIP) allows you to invest a fixed amount

at regular intervals in a mutual fund. A SIP calculator estimates the

potential value of those periodic investments using an assumed rate

of return and an investment period.

A SIP is an investment method, not a separate investment product.

Your result depends on the performance of the mutual fund you choose,

the timing of investments, expenses and market conditions.

How to Use the SIP Calculator

  1. Enter your monthly SIP: For example, ₹5,000.
  2. Enter an expected annual return: Use an assumption for illustration, not as a promised return.
  3. Select your investment duration: For example, 10, 15 or 20 years.
  4. Calculate: Review your estimated future value, total contributions and potential gain.
  5. Compare scenarios: Try different monthly amounts, return assumptions and time periods to understand how the outcome changes.

SIP Calculator Formula

For a fixed monthly SIP invested at the end of each month, the

estimated future value is calculated using:

FV = P × [((1 + r)n − 1) / r]

Where:

  • FV: Estimated future value of the SIP.
  • P: Monthly investment amount.
  • r: Assumed monthly rate of return, calculated here as annual rate ÷ 12.
  • n: Total number of monthly investments (years × 12).

If the assumed return is 0%, the future value is simply the monthly

investment multiplied by the number of months.

This formula assumes a constant monthly rate for mathematical

illustration. Real mutual fund returns fluctuate and do not follow

a fixed monthly growth rate.

₹5,000 Monthly SIP: Illustrative Return Examples

The following examples use an assumed annual return of 12%, divided

into a monthly rate of 1%, with contributions made at the end of each

month. Values are rounded and are not actual fund performance.

5 years₹3,00,000₹4.08 lakh₹1.08 lakh
10 years₹6,00,000₹11.50 lakh₹5.50 lakh

25 years₹15,00,000₹93.97 lakh₹78.97 lakh

depending on the calculation convention. No return is assured.

How Much SIP Do You Need for Your Financial Goal?

Start with a clear financial goal and a realistic time horizon.

A longer investment period may allow compounding more time to work,

but it cannot eliminate market risk.

  • ₹10 lakh goal: Estimate the monthly investment required for your chosen period and return assumption.
  • ₹25 lakh goal: Compare different SIP amounts and investment horizons.
  • ₹50 lakh goal: Review whether your current contribution is aligned with your target.
  • ₹1 crore goal: Test different scenarios and consider inflation, taxes and the risk of lower-than-expected returns.

Remember that a future target will not have the same purchasing power

as the same amount today. Include inflation when planning for retirement,

education or other long-term expenses.

Important Things to Consider Before Starting a SIP

  • Emergency fund: Keep money available for unexpected expenses before committing to long-term investments.
  • Investment horizon: Match the fund category and its risks to when you will need the money.
  • Risk tolerance: Equity mutual funds can experience significant declines, including over extended periods.
  • Costs: Review the expense ratio and any applicable transaction or exit-load provisions.
  • Taxes: Tax treatment depends on the fund type, holding period and applicable rules when you redeem.
  • Review: Reassess your investments periodically against your goals instead of reacting to every market movement.

Frequently Asked Questions About SIP Calculators

1. Is the SIP calculator free to use?

Yes. This calculator is free to use and provides mathematical estimates based on the inputs you enter.

2. Are SIP returns guaranteed?

No. Mutual fund returns are market-linked. The calculator uses an assumed return and cannot predict or guarantee actual performance.

3. How much can ₹5,000 per month grow in 20 years?

At an illustrative annual return of 12%, a ₹5,000 monthly SIP for 20 years could grow to approximately ₹49.5 lakh under the calculation assumptions above. The actual value can be lower or higher.

4. Can I start a SIP with ₹500 per month?

Some mutual fund schemes permit SIPs starting at ₹500, but the minimum amount and instalment conditions vary by scheme and platform. Check the scheme documents before investing.

5. Does a SIP calculator include taxes and expenses?

This basic calculator does not deduct taxes, expense ratios or other applicable costs. Your realised investment value may differ from the estimate.

6. Is SIP better than a fixed deposit?

They have different risk and return characteristics. SIPs in mutual funds are market-linked, while bank fixed deposits generally offer a stated interest rate subject to their terms. Compare liquidity, tax treatment, time horizon and risk before deciding.

7. What annual return should I enter?

There is no universally correct assumption. Try several scenarios to see how sensitive the result is to returns. Do not use a calculator assumption as a forecast or as evidence that a fund will deliver that return.

8. Does increasing my SIP improve my potential corpus?

Increasing the monthly investment generally increases the projected corpus when other assumptions remain the same. Actual results still depend on investment performance and the amount and timing of contributions.
